Civil Geeks: Exoplanetpalooza

Astronomers in Hawaii play a critical role in the search for planets orbiting stars beyond our own solar system. My latest “Civil Geeks” column explores a recent sky survey that identified over 100 new exoplanets.

Although the existence of alien life will be hard to prove, it’s becoming increasingly probable.

“We already know, from work from this team and others, that probably more than half of stars have planets; and a pretty good fraction of these have planets in their habitable zones,” Gal said. “But we did not always suspect planetary systems were common — guesses ran from 1 percent to 100 percent of stars hosting planets.”

“Now we know the answer, and they are more common than I think most astronomers expected,” he said.

Civil Geeks: Virtues of Venomous Creatures

I got to interview one of my favorite scientists for my latest “Civil Geeks” column. Christie Wilcox is a beloved and respective science blogger and communicator who recently published her first book. “Venomous: How Earth’s Deadliest Creatures Mastered Biochemistry“:

“The book gave me the chance to share the awesomeness of venomous animals with the world, and maybe, just maybe, someone who reads it will be a little less fearful and a little more in awe of these incredible animals,” she said.

Meanwhile, she continues to blog, and continues her work, both in advocating and conducting scientific research. She’s currently working as a post-doctoral trainee in the lab of UH jellyfish researcher Angel Yanagihara on effective ways to treat stings — rather than folk remedies ranging from ice packs to pee.

“I never realized how often medical advice is given without evidence to really back it up,” she said. “Sometimes even from doctors.”

Civil Geeks: Learning to Live with Vog

My latest “Civil Geeks” column features a new website designed to help Hawaii residents cope with life downwind of an active volcano.

The website — along with a booklet of frequently asked questions, a brochure and poster about protecting yourself during vog episodes — came together following a 2015 study by Horwell, which looked at how local communities perceive and deal with vog as well as how they seek and receive information.

“Feedback from the community highlighted the difficulty many people were having in locating vog resources and the concept of creating a vog dashboard was born,” Elias said. “Our group is familiar with the various monitoring networks and vog resources associated with Kilauea and so were in a good position to help consolidate this information.”

Civil Geeks: Startups Leave Hawaii and That’s Okay

My latest (and penultimate) column for Civil Beat addresses comments I’ve constantly heard throughout the growth of Hawaii’s nascent innovation economy. When a local startup announces that it’s relocating to Silicon Valley, there are a lot of congratulations but also a few complaints.

A startup’s ability to succeed outside Hawaii is an important part of the decision to invest in it, Farnsworth said.

“Even in the best of circumstances, you will need to expand beyond the state, and our job is to invest in companies that we think are going to scale in that way,” she said. “When they do, we’re happy.”

And a move by any other name might smell as sweet.

“The terminology we use is sometimes negative,” she said. “Did they leave or did they expand to the mainland? When they open an office in San Francisco, I think, ‘Awesome, they’re thriving.’”

Civil Geeks: Tales from The Other Side

My last “Civil Geeks” column is a continuation of the previous piece addressing the practical and positive reasons why Hawaii startups often make the leap to the West Coast. In part two, I talk to entrepreneurs about why they decided to head across the ocean.

Once settled in San Francisco, Hawaii startups are finding a receptive but sometimes skeptical audience.

“I get the sense that geography is quickly becoming less of a factor in the eyes of investors and entrepreneurs — rather than where they’re based, startups are being increasingly judged by their merits alone,” Bennett said. “In this sense, startups in Hawaii are perceived in the same way as startups from any other city.”

“[We are treated] just like every other startup, no special treatment,” Greevy said. “If you haven’t had an exit or graduated from Stanford or an Ivy League school, you have to work even harder for validation.”

Are you traveling to a country that requires vaccinations? This is important anytime you try to enter a country or when it is time to leave, as well as traveling between some cities in the country. Tip In order to plan an appropriate budget, make sure you understand the currency rates of the country you are traveling to. Knowing the spending power of each dollar before you arrive will give you a better picture of what is affordable and help you draft an itinerary.

Don’t travel by car at rush hour. If you can’t plan your trip where you won’t be driving during rush hour, use that time to stop for a break. Use this time to get a snack or allow the children to get some exercise.

Tip If you are traveling to a different time zone, you may experience jet lag. You can lessen the impact by sleeping more than usual a few days before you take off.

These tips can really help you to have great vacations consistently. When booking a trip in the future, try using these tips to start with. Having this information at your disposal is a great stress reliever as it will save your time planning your trip.

Tip Stay awake until 8 PM in the time zone you are in if you want to adjust to the time zone you are in. With jet lag having set in, you must keep from sleeping too early or take the chance of prolonging it.
