‘This American Life’ Visits Niihau

“The Forbidden Isle” will be featured in an upcoming episode of “This American Life.”

Titled “I Don’t Make the Rules,” episode #611 of the popular radio program will visit the island of Niihau, which is privately held and nearly impossible to visit.

“The owner of a Hawaiian island adapts rules originally set in the nineteenth century — and not everyone is happy with her interpretation,” reads the synopsis for the episode, which will also include a piece about a New Jersey judge and other stories.

The Niihau segment was featured at the close of the most recent re-broadcast of “This American Life.”

“There’s this island in Hawaii that most of us would never be allowed onto,” says host Ira Glass. “It’s for native Hawaiians to live in a more traditional way. It’s been that way since the 1860s. It’s the last place on Earth where they speak Hawaiian as the everyday language. No running water, no street lights, no drinking, no drugs, no talking to journalists. We go there next week.”

The episode will be broadcast nationally beginning on Friday, March 3. In Hawaii, Hawaii Public Radio will air it Saturday, March 4 at 1 p.m. on HPR-1 (88.1FM Honolulu).

Coinbase Pulls Out of Hawaii

One of the world’s largest bitcoin exchanges announced today that it would be closing accounts of customers in Hawaii due to state regulatory policies that “will render continued Coinbase operations in Hawaii impractical.”

The announcement comes despite recent movement in the Hawaii state legislature to study the uses of and determine best practices regarding blockchain technology.

In an email sent this morning to customers titled, “Urgent Notice to Coinbase Hawaii Customers,” the company wrote:

“Although we strive to provide continuous access to Coinbase services, we regret to inform you that Coinbase is indefinitely suspending services in Hawaii. The Hawaii Division of Financial Institutions has recently communicated regulatory policies which will render continued Coinbase operations in Hawaii impractical. We understand this suspension will inconvenience our Hawaii customers and we apologize that we cannot currently project if or when our services may be restored.”

The email pointed to a longer write-up on the Coinbase support site which explained further:

“We understand that the Hawaii DFI will require licensure of entities which offer certain virtual currency services to Hawaii residents. Although Coinbase has no objection to this policy decision, we understand the Hawaii DFI has further determined that licensees who hold virtual currency on behalf of customers must maintain redundant fiat currency reserves in an amount equal to the aggregate face value of all digital currency funds held on behalf of customers. Although Coinbase securely maintains 100% of all customer funds on behalf of our customers, it is impractical, costly, and inefficient for us to establish a redundant reserve of fiat currency over and above customer digital currency secured on our platform.”

Also this morning, Coinbase legal representative Juan Suarez penned an article on Medium that put the companies position more plainly. Titled “How Bad Policy Harms Coinbase Customers in Hawaii,” Suarez noted that Hawaii stands apart from nearly every other U.S. state.

“This policy is obviously untenable,” he writes. “No digital currency business — and frankly, no commercially viable business anywhere — has the capital to supplement every customer bitcoin with redundant dollar collateral.”

Even though Suarez says the state’s policy provides no practical protections to Hawaii consumers, it has forced Coinbase to close the accounts of Hawaii customers and to prevent people in Hawaii to open new accounts, leaving them with “no good options.”

“Hawaii customers wishing to hold onto their digital currency will need to send their funds to another wallet service and we cannot recommend any service which meets Coinbase’s security standards and which is licensed to operate in Hawaii,” Suarez wrote.

Suarez does see a glimmer of hope in the Hawaii state house bill that would create a “digital currency and blockchain working group,” and adds that Coinbase hopes to convince the department commissioner to revisit the policy and work with policymakers to change the law.

“We look forward to working with them, the DFI, and others to help Hawaii join nearly every other State in the Union by adopting policies that will make it practicable to operate a successful digital currency businesses in Hawaii and we hope to be back in Hawaii sometime soon,” Suarez concludes.

Tips For Ensuring That Your Wedding Won’t Kill Your Budget

Weddings are confusing. When you plan your wedding, it should be enjoyable, since you don’t need more stress related to your wedding day. This will reduce the amount of stress that you face.

Religion will play a big role not only in your wedding ceremony but in your marriage as a whole. It may help to discuss this with your families so that they understand how you plan on handling dual faiths in your marriage.

You can save quite a bit of money by purchasing your wedding dress over the Internet, but make sure to factor in shipping and alteration time when planning when to order. However, you should figure in the cost of alterations when calculating your savings. Be sure to include the potential alterations cost into your budget.

When you’re planning on who to give the speeches at your wedding, have them rehearse the things they would say in front of you so you can determine if everything they say will be appropriate. Remember that your guests will include people across a wide range of ages, and a joke that younger generations find amusing might be offensive to older guests.

You can use the property of someone you know for your wedding. If someone you know has a nice backyard or a large farm, this can save a lot of money. You could pay for a cleaning service to come through before and after the wedding and make that the only cost.

Of course, your most important priority is to ensure that you love your prospective spouse and want to spend the rest of your life with him. This is a huge commitment, and rushing into things for the sake of being married may be catastrophic. Take the time to make sure you are ready to make a lifetime commitment to your fiance and consider the things that you love about them, as well as the things that drive you crazy.

Choose one item to incorporate into all the different aspects of your wedding. Make sure that some of the accessories you have are included in the wedding. These little details will elevate your wedding since it will show all the effort you put into it.

Be sure to browse around for experienced and skilled photographers, before you commit to one for your wedding. You don’t want to end up with a photographer that you’re not going to be happy with. Check online reviews or ask your family members for recommendations on a good photographer where you live.

Don’t postpone the reception while you have photographs taken. The bride, groom and wedding party should take the photos in advance. Pictures with the couples respective parents should also be taken in advance to cut down on wait time for the guests arriving at the reception.

Even if you picked out and bought your dress, the wedding shop should keep it until your wedding. By putting it in your closet, it could get wrinkly or get stained. Keeping it safely at the shop will ensure that it is in pristine condition and ready for your wedding day.

Silk flowers are an attractive alternative to expensive floral arrangements at a wedding. You can get these way in advance because they aren’t fresh and then have them on hand and reduce one thing to do right before the big day.

This article has given you tips on what to do and what to avoid when it comes to wedding planning. Now, the process won’t stress you out. Enjoy the days ahead before your wedding, and enjoy your new life together.

Geek Beat: Drone Showdown

With the World Drone Racing Championships taking place this weekend on the North Shore, it seemed like a good time to revisit drones… always a reliable topic of conversation.

DroneWorlds” is bringing together races from 30 countries at Kualoa Ranch. Although there are several competitions hosted around the world (including a state championship match on Maui this past summer), this one seems to have the right credentials as an “Official Sanctioned Event” of the Drone Sports Association and the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA), the latter being an organization I’ve actually heard of.

For those interested more in aerial imagery than first-person racing, action camera company GoPro is entering the consumer drone market (taking aim at 800-lb. industry gorilla DJI) with its $799 foldable Karma. Beyond its size, the company is courting beginners with a promise of being easy to use, an included controller with a screen, and even a grip to let you use the stabilizing gimbal while walking around, drone-less.

And for those just looking to have some simple fun, electronics firm Parrot is still sitting pretty at the entry-level, lower-end of the market with its tiny, playful Mambo. You can get one with a little “cannon” or a tiny “grabber,” depending on the kinds of hijinks you want to get into.

Geek Beat: High-End Hardware

Microsoft staked its claim to the high-end hardware market with the announcement of its new Surface Book and its giant Surface Studio. The company is clearly positioning itself against Apple, which announced a new MacBook Pro that has left some Apple fans wanting.

The Microsoft Surface Book i7 is the follow up to last year’s Surface Book, its first-ever laptop. But, not to be confused with the Surface Pro 4, the new Surface Book has one big upgrade that’s turning some fans off: the starting price is $2,400, compared to the $1,300 entry point for its 2015 predecessor. Still, for an “ultimate 2-in-1” that can be a laptop and a tablet, it looks pretty slick.

There’s nothing at all practical about the Microsoft Surface Studio, but that’s why it’s so impressive. Sure it costs more than $3,000, but it’s a massive, brilliant, 28-inch touchscreen that can lay back and basically become a digital drafting board. Some of its neatest features require a Surface Dial, which adds additional physical dimensions to digital controls.

Microsoft’s big news comes as Apple’s long, long, long awaited update to its MacBook Pro line has left some Apple fans underwhelmed. Sure, there’s the great screen, the more powerful processor, and the brand new “Touch Bar” that replaces the top row of function keys with a customizable touch screen. It looks great, and weighs the same as the once “ultralight” MacBook Air. But Apple is also dropping MagSafe for USB-C, and in fact going so big on USB-C that there are no “old-fashioned” USB ports at all.

Still, I really want one.

Geek Beat: Fake News and Filter Bubbles

With many still reeling from the results of the U.S. presidential election, our friends at Hawaii News Now called an audible, setting aside the gadgets to tackle the intersection of tech and politics. After a quick mannequin challenge.

Facebook’s role in shaping the national dialogue and influencing political contests was a big topic before November 8, but the discussion has reached a fever pitch since Election Day. A social network that’s optimized for “engagement” over credibility is bound to run into trouble given the naturally engaging qualities of “fake news.” No less than Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg stepped up to address the issue.

Twitter, of course, has problems of its own, with well-known issues with harassment and hate speech. The company has unrolled another set of tools to help users find peace in the chaos of the “free speech wing of the free speech party” (as Twitter is often described). You can now “mute” users, as well as use updated procedures to report harassment.

Finally, with Trump in the White House, the tech industry is wondering what his administration will mean for business. One of the earliest signals of a shift in national policy was a drop in the share price of Tesla, a company that is betting big on renewable energy. In a country where alternative energy might be pushed aside for more conventional sources like oil and coal, Tesla’s bet seems less like a sure thing.

Geek Beat: Honda, Polaroid & LEGO

This week, we followed the Hawaii News Now “Sunrise” morning crew out to the Waialae Country Club for the Sony Open. After some shenanigans with a hot dog, we served another mixed plate of tech news, featuring Honda’s new self-balancing motorcycle, Polaroid’s 3-D pen, and the LEGO Boost system.

Honda unveiled its Riding Assist system not at an auto show, but at CES (formerly known as the Consumer Electronics Show). It could be a huge advancement for shorter, smaller, or older riders, keeping itself upright at low speeds. Interestingly, rather than using a gyroscope or other mass-shifting mechanism, it instead uses minute steering inputs to keep the bike balanced.

Speaking of fine motor control, reinvigorated digital technologies company Polaroid this week also unveiled its Play 3-D pen. You can draw in space, and use the special Trace app to draw parts to more complex structures. You can even use the app to draw your favorite photos with plastic filament.

Finally, LEGO takes its robotics kits (like Mindstorm) to the next level with LEGO Boost. This time, the focus isn’t so much on mechanical motors but on programming, using a special app that introduces basic concepts with code “blocks.” The demo is pretty awesome and the concept is sound, but Boost won’t be available until this fall.

Geek Beat: Snap, Amazon & Uber

The tech and investing world is picking apart Snap’s filing for its Initial Public Offering in March, the Amazon Echo continues to learn new skills, and Uber dreams of a fleet of flying cars. These are the stories we cover in this week’s “Geek Beat” on Hawaii News Now’s “Sunrise” morning show.

Snap, formerly known as Snapchat, has revealed the details of its IPO, including its ambition to raise $3 billion on a valuation of more than $22 billion. Although the five-year-old company is best known for its “disappearing photos” app, the SEC filing describes Snap as “a camera company.” Snap also had to disclose its weaknesses, including slowing user growth, and strong competition from Facebook’s Instagram, which has basically copied most of Snap’s most distinctive features.

The Amazon Echo, one of the most popular home voice assistants, is benefitting from a growing community of independent developers who are creating new “skills.” From checking stock prices to playing rainforest sounds to accessing city services, this accessible piece of hardware ($50 for the Echo Dot) is getting smarter every week.

Finally, Uber has taken a big step towards building Uber Elevate, a future fleet of flying cars, announced last fall. This week, the disruptive transportation company hired a NASA engineer to work on the project. Mark Moore had worked for NASA for 30 years and was a year away from retirement, but the dream of flying cars was apparently too compelling. In 2010, Moore had himself proposed a way to achieve the dream in a whitepaper — a document that Uber says inspired its Elevate plans.

Geek Beat: Black Friday Tech Shopping

Once again, we were able to join the bleary-eyed Hawaii News Now “Sunrise” morning crew on their annual pilgrimage to Honolulu’s retail hotspots for “Black Friday.”

Burt and I headed over to Pearlridge Center to recommend some tech gifts for Christmas. Although I’m an iPhone user, I was able to share some love with the Google Pixel smartphone, pretty much the nicest Android device on the market. Burt’s pick, thanks to a loaner from local photographer Ricky Li, was the GoPro Karma foldable drone, still hard to find online or in stores. Finally, a practical if somewhat repetitive pick, external batteries for your devices. The twist this year is new restrictions on shipping lithium ion batteries, meaning local retailers like Battery Bill have something to be merry about.

Geek Beat: Hour of Code

It’s Computer Science Education Week! This international celebration of computers and technology and STEM education brings a lot of great events to schools around the world, and in Hawaii.

One of the keystone events of CSEd Week is the “Hour of Code,” which aims to expose every student to computer programming for at least 60 minutes. There were more than 160 events scheduled in Hawaii. The company I work for, Hawaii Information Service, was invited to Kapunahala Elementary in Kaneohe to work with more than two dozen students, working with free online tutorials from Code.org.

The focus on software development also allowed us to again feature DevLeague, an intensive local coding bootcamp. Graduates come out of the program ready for programming jobs, and DevLeague works hard to place them in local companies. (Hawaii Information Services just hired one!) There’s even a “Junior DevLeague” program that extends the pipeline into schools to reach younger students.

Finally, we touch on ways to learn programming at home, on your own, provided you have the discipline to stick with it. They include Codecademy, the Khan Academy, and Free Code Camp.

Geek Beat: Amazon Go, Live Video & Emoji

This week’s “Geek Beat” segment was a mixed plate of tech news, including Amazon’s new brick-and-mortar “Go” concept store, Twitter’s live video offering, and the latest batch of new emoji.

Amazon, which has been credited with killing off more than its fair share of physical stores, is now making headlines for setting up its own. “Amazon Go” is “a new kind of store with no checkout required.” All you need is the app, and you’re able to enter the store, grab what you want, and leave, no checkout lines (or chatty cashiers) required.

Meanwhile, the “live video” wars are heating up. On the heels of Instagram unveiling and promoting its “Live Instagram Stories,” Twitter introduced the ability to go live directly in the Twitter app. (Previously, you had to use Periscope, a separate live streaming app that Twitter acquired last year.) Where does that leave Snapchat, the young and hip app that mostly confounds anyone over 25?

Finally, we talked about the latest batch of emoji coming out for iPhone users with iOS 10.2. (The new emoji are technically already available on Android, except almost no Android phone has the latest version of the operating system.) There’s a lot of good stuff, including more gender diversity and food items like bacon. But the new symbol that will probably see the most use in Hawaii is the “call me hand,” which obviously looks more like a hang-ten shaka.

What You Should Know Before Getting Married

Getting married in an off-season will lower your wedding costs. Most weddings are between June and August. Wedding venues are more expensive during this time. If you’re going to want to marry in this time period, be sure you’re booking in advance so you can still attract a good deal.

Tip Are you bringing in food yourself to your reception? Visit a wholesale store to stock up. When shopping wholesale, you can get large amounts of food for cheaper than you could if you did not wholesale shop.

The process of planning a wedding can be really time-consuming. A wedding only comes around once for many people, so everyone wants it to be perfect. This article will help you to decide what is best for you.

Try ethnic-themed catering to add some spice to your reception. Chicken and steak are a little boring, so how about going for a variety? Variety should be incorporated into your wedding dinner to make it a memorable experience.

Tip You want to practice that wedding day aisle walk, especially if you plan to wear heels. If you fear turning your ankle awkwardly, think about flat heels instead.

Personalize your wedding by including unique touches that express the essence and interests of you and your new spouse. Select a theme that represents the time that you have spent with each other.

Your family or friends could carry the gear for you. Your assistant can also be useful when it comes to group shots and rounding up all the required family members.

Tip Don’t postpone the reception while you have photographs taken. The photos concerning the rest of the wedding party should be done in advance.

You don’t want to starve yourself leading up to your wedding day just to fit into your dress. Starving yourself will just dehydrate you and make you feel sick. Passing out at the altar in the middle of exchanging vows? Not a pleasant thought. Rather, get a dress with an integrated corset so that it can be easily adjusted.

Try to arrange to hold your reception in mid-day. Most people will drink less during the day, which will cut back on the cost to fill the bar. In addition, you can save money by serving lunch instead of dinner at your reception. You may be able to purchase a higher-quality menu at lunch time for the price you would have paid for dinner. Keep in mind that if you spend less on food, you can use the savings to pay for another service your wedding requires.

Tip Place your colorful wedding cake on a swatch of fabric that coordinates with the cake. You can choose to use solids, patterns or textured fabrics like silk, velvet or satin to create a visual interest that will tie all these elements together.

The first thing you have to think about is the person you are marrying. Do not rush this life altering lifelong decision. Give this person’s habits and peccadilloes a great deal of consideration.

Have your wedding while on a cruise with your close family and friends. This way, you can begin your honeymoon right after your ceremony is finished. You may even get a great wedding deal.

Tip Craigslist is a good outlet for locating local talent for your wedding. Be sure you meet up with them in person, safely, before you pay them any money.

If you’re terrified at the thought of spending a fortune on a wedding cake loaded with calories, talk to local bakeries about something with a smaller portion size. Some specialty bakeries also ship fresh, low-cal cupcakes and healthy fare, like gluten-free options if you so desire.

Dress the children in the wedding party in comfortable clothing. By utilizing softer fabrics, the children in your ceremony will look great while feeling quite comfortable. You also need to give children a chance to get used to new shoes. Whether shoes are old or new, your children need to be comfortable in them during the wedding. Paying attention to your children’s comfort can help them behave appropriately during the wedding. Uncomfortable children will be focused on fixing their discomfort and may fidget or engage in other distracting behavior. If your children are comfortable, however, they’ll be excited about participating in the wedding and behave appropriately.

Tip If you are going to be giving a wedding speech, make sure that you practice and plan appropriately. Don’t wait until the last minute to write your speech, or forget about it once it’s written.

Flowers look beautiful as centerpieces on the dinner tables, but don’t overdo it. Often, flowers interfere with guests being able to converse across the table. Also, some of your guests may have allergies to the flowers. Instead, you could place candles (non-scented) on the table tops to add a romantic feel to the reception.

If you’re planning on having your reception outdoors, talk to your caterer about appropriate food choices for the event. The food you serve will need to be kept at certain temperatures to be safe, or will need to be shielded from wind and flying debris. You might be able to use fancy or insulated covers for dishes. Perhaps a small fridge could be used to keep drinks chilled.

Tip If you can’t afford expensive floral arrangements, consider using potted plants throughout the reception and ceremony areas. Seek out plants in lovely glazed pots, or make a simple stone look elegant with some ribbons and paint.

Whether your wedding is large or small, you are sure to want every aspect of it to be perfect. Whether this is your first or third marriage, the wedding needs months of preparation and planning. Everything you’ve read should help you pull of a remarkable wedding that truly reflects your style.

Floral designs that vary in height can help improve your decor. Obviously you want the low profile florals in the shorter vases, while the long and more spectacular flowers, like roses, should be in taller containers. You can then surround the vases using flowers with more show and volume but that are shorter. Also, opt for darker shades for your long stem flowers and lighter shades for the shorter flowers.

Plan A Wedding The Easy Way With These Tips

As you plan your wedding, you must consider the type and amount of alcohol you wish to serve, especially if you’re working with a budget. For example, an open bar can cost you an arm and a leg, especially if it’s open throughout your reception. Inquire at your venue what your alcoholic beverage serving options are.

Tip If you’re doing your own catering, Costco is a place that can save you a lot on wedding food. This is no secret but buying your foods from the big club stores will save quite a bit of money over retail grocery chains and that is considering the membership charge.

Weddings are confusing. Wedding planning should be fun, and you don’t want to be stuck stressing out about your big day. You just need the right information, and thankfully, you’ll find it if you keep reading.

The wedding dress may be a major expense. Don’t limit yourself to considering dresses that are marketed specifically as wedding gowns. For example, a bridesmaid dress is typically much less expensive and may be just what you’re looking for. Many times, you can alter the dress to make it look like a wedding dress for a fraction of the cost of an actual wedding dress.

Tip Once you know who all is going to give a speech at your wedding, hold a rehearsal for everyone so you can censor out inappropriate material. There are a lot of different age groups at a wedding.

Realize that religion is going to play a major role on your actual wedding day and moving forward in your marriage. You should talk about religion not only with your fiance but his family as well, to build understanding between you.

The wedding pictures are amongst the most important wedding mementos. Even though it can me costly, your best bet is to have a professional photographer take your pictures so you get the best quality possible.

Tip When you are choosing a makeup artist for your ceremony, always look at samples of their previous work. Is the style of make up look attractive to you? Be sure they can create the look you want.

You’re going to look at the pictures from your wedding for many years to come, so make sure that you get good quality photos taken. Hire a professional to take your photographs even if it costs a little more as you’ll be able to rely on the fact that your entire day will be captured properly.

Keep transportation in mind when planning your wedding. If anyone needs a ride to or from their hotel for the event, you should arrange limos or taxis. This is also helpful for anyone who has had alcohol at the wedding.

Tip If the thought of a cake that costs thousands of dollars and packs on thousands of calories ruins your appetite, check with local and specialty bakers and inquire about individually sized portions. Some bakeries are able to make healthier cupcakes that contain less than 100 calories in each serving providing you with healthier options such as fruit- fillings in replacement to frosting, calorie-free sweeteners and gluten-free ingredients.

Of course you probably know to tell your DJ or band what songs you expect, but also consider telling them songs you absolutely do not want at your wedding. It might be specific genres you wish to avoid, or even particular songs that relate to a past relationship. Regardless of the reason, let your DJ know to prevent you cringing at your reception.

Brides who have issues with skin irritation or pimples can improve the appearance of her skin by changing her skincare regimen. Find facial treatments that brighten the complexion with soothing ingredients such as rose hips, oatmeal scrubs and sea salts.

Tip Practice going down the aisle while wearing the shoes you are going to wear at the wedding. If you’re worried that you will twist your ankle, you can wear flats instead.

You could get help from someone else who is attending the wedding. They could help you carry your gear. They can also be of assistance in rounding everyone up for the group photographs, and this will make sure no one is left out.

Sweet cupcakes are great alternatives to an expensive cake. People love these arrangements because they don’t cost a lot, are versatile, and convenient. Those who were invited will grab them at will and consume them rather quickly as opposed to wrapping the pieces they grab in a napkin and forgetting it.

Tip If you are hosting a destination wedding, your guests may appreciate receiving a basket of vacation goodies in their room on their arrival. Some useful items to include might be tourist information, sun hats, sunglasses, disposable cameras, maps of the area, sunscreen, and so on.

A thoughtful gift for destination wedding guests to receive is a basket of vacation goodies delivered to them in their room. Include gifts that are sure to be useful while on location at the wedding, like sunglasses, tourist maps, disposable cameras, hats, and pamphlets that detail all of the best attractions in the local area. One piece that will really make this idea a hit with everyone is to include a restaurant guide so that all your guests are able to find options that they enjoy.

The lighting at the venue hosting your wedding’s reception should be able to be dimmed. This may seem like a minor factor, but many couples like dimming the lights for a first dance, and switching to brighter lights for the remainder of the event. Be sure to find out about these details before you decide for sure.

Tip If the happy couple have different backgrounds, both ought to be taken into consideration when planning for the wedding. This means having a ceremony that fits the groom and bride’s culture and at the reception, having decor, food and rituals from both backgrounds.

So, now you have a head start on planning for your big day. You should enjoy everything leading up to the wedding and then get on with enjoying your marriage.

Every aspect of a wedding should be planned in minute detail. You want to draw everyone in, and make all of your guests remember this joyous occasion.

Planning A Wedding? Try These Great Ideas!

Your wedding may be the biggest day of your life. Unfortunately most people overextend themselves financially because they let others dictate their planning, but the event can be beautiful and not as expensive as you may think. You can have a beautiful wedding without breaking the bank. With some creativity and planning, you can have a gorgeous wedding at a bargain price.

If you will be catering your own wedding, look to wholesale markets such as Sam’s or Costco to buy supplies. This is no secret but buying your foods from the big club stores will save quite a bit of money over retail grocery chains and that is considering the membership charge. See if your friends can split some of the cost.

Actual Wedding Dress

Your wedding dress could be one of the most expensive items included in your wedding, but there are ways to save money on this purchase. You might want to consider a dress which is not categorized specifically for the bride. You could try a bridesmaid dress, and it would be cheaper than an actual wedding dress. Even if this dress is not perfect and you need some adjustments made to make it your dream dress, it could still run you quite a bit less then an actual wedding dress.

Purchasing wedding gowns through the Internet can help save you a lot of money, but see to it that you do it early in order to have enough time to alter it if needed. You want to make sure that you think about other expenses that you might not commonly think of, like having the wedding gown altered, which can cost extra money. Be sure to work the additional cost for alterations into your overall budget.

Brides who want a look of luxury can embellish their wedding bouquets with something that sparkles, like rhinestones, Swarovski crystals, or even a tiny bit of diamonds. You can use small pieces of costume jewelry, heat-fixed or adhesive crystals, or perhaps a treasured heirloom. Make sure that it will match everything else in your wedding outfit by remaining consistent with the colors you choose, the cut, and also the size of your stones.

If you have a destination wedding, offer a basket full of goodies delivered to guests in their rooms. This gift basket can include helpful items such as sunscreen, sunglasses, disposable cameras and tourist maps that add a nice touch of flavor to the vacation. Be sure to include a local restaurant guide and possibly some coupons to make dining easy.

Noon is the best time for a reception. Doing this, people will likely drink far less alcohol and keep your bar tab lighter. Having your wedding during the midday can also cut food costs and even get you a discount for booking during the day.

You need not heavily invest your funds to have a great wedding. These ideas will help to make your special day memorable.

Great Travel Ideas For Traveling Like An Expert

Traveling is a good way to see new places in having a new perspective of the world. Despite the many advantages of exploring the world through travel, downsides include the cost and the time commitment. Below you will be able to find helpful tips that you can use to make your vacation time as fun and affordable as it can possibly be.

Tip Use an ATM instead of a currency exchange when traveling abroad. Banks get better exchange rates that you may get.

Once you’ve chosen your destination, take the time to get to know more about where you’re going. Buy a map of the area in which you are visiting, learn about the environment, and find tourist attractions. It will be easier for you to get around when you know about the area.

Tip Use a list to help you pack your essentials. Create this list either a few months to a week before your trip.

Be cautious when traveling to foreign destinations. Criminals may pose as government or police officials. Do not give over your personal information, as you could end up with no identification fast. If they insist on transporting you to an office, walk with them. Do not get into a vehicle with someone that you do not know.

Tip Bring a doorstop for safety reasons. The little rubber or wooden wedges that hold doors open can also hold doors closed.

When traveling through smaller airports, check their websites to discover every airline that offers service there. Some small airports may have charters with better deals.

Tip When you are traveling, it is important to remember to be aware of your vital belongings at all times. If you have a purse with you, keep it close to your body at all times.

When traveling to foreign countries, you should be aware of the taxi companies in the city. Make sure any taxi you get into is legitimate. Anyone can put the word “taxi” on their vehicle, and you would never be the wiser.

Tip Be sure to put identification information inside your luggage in addition to the normal luggage tag. The luggage tag may be ripped off during transit.

Take clothespins along the next time you travel. These are not typical travel gear, but they do come in handy.

Tip Don’t drive during rush hour. At the very least, take a stop during that time.

While you should use a traditional luggage tag, you should also put your info somewhere inside the luggage. Exterior ones may be lost or damaged during travel. This increases the chance you will have it returned.

Tip Attempt to get the “local” hotel rate when traveling. Hotels often cater to locals with deals so that they don’t have to deal with vacancy.

These save very little space to begin with, and most nice hotels provide their guests with basic toiletries like shampoo and soap. Try simple folding and packing tricks to expand your luggage space instead. This will help you in your quest to get some more space in your bags.

Tip When you take a cruise, chat with other guests during meals. You will probably be sitting at a large table with other couples and families.

Ask to see if your credit card company has insurance coverage for traveling abroad. For example, will they cover a cancelled flight? Having insurance can protect you from problems that may arise before or during your trip.

Tip When taking a long road trip, it is important to know where the service stations are. You will find that service areas are few and far between, especially when on long road trips.

Use these travel tips for a quick road trip or an extended vacation to a foreign country. Get out and start your adventure. Traveling is truly interesting and fulfilling.

Tip Exchanging currency abroad is highly discouraged. You can get that country’s currency easily.
