Hot Tubs and High Heels on Kauai, Hawaii

COMMENTARY | I would like to add to my series about fun Kauai activities by plugging the Kauai Athletic Club in Lihue, just a little bit without being too promotional. I was a member there for a while and they have some great facilities for racquetball and yoga. They have all the treadmill machines and weightlifting tools that you would ever want to use. Not only that, but there is a deli that has lots of health foods and beverages. Behind the main building is a swimming pool and a suntan area. As a visitor, you can pay by the day to visit the club and all the charges are super reasonable.

I would give them a thumbs up in every department, except one. There is a dinky little hot tub.

Which brings me to the subject and to my list of the top 5 hot tubs of Kauai.

#1 The Kauai Marriott Beach Resort in Lihue

I mentioned this place in a previous article about their art collections and humdinger of a pool. Did I also mention that they have five hot tubs? Most of them you have to swim to get to and a few of them have gazebo towers to look at the view of Kalapaki Beach. The various hot tubs are set for different temperatures so you can find the one that’s just right. I have been in a lot of hot tubs and there is no comparison. With waterfalls and fountains close by, it’s an H2O utopia.

#2 The Princeville Hotel on the North Shore

This entire resort is fantastically beautiful and the hotel cascades toward the beach. On Kauai, you can’t make a building taller than a coconut tree. These clever architects built the hotel down the hill to get around that rule. At the bottom is the pool and hot tub area which looks onto the ocean view of Hanalei Bay. It’s one big hot tub with a reliable and sassy cocktail waitress. Out on the lawn are tents where honeymooners are getting back rubs from their personal masseuse. There are often musicians in the evening and by torchlight, the place takes on a rather nostalgic atmosphere.

#3 The Hyatt in Poipu

My goodness, where to start? The backyard of the Hyatt is a world all its own with Koi fish ponds and floating restaurants. The pathway to the hot tub is an adventure through a carefully landscaped tropical fantasy. It’s right next to the Shipwreck’s Beach. The plants and flowers and architecture is a testament to what can be done with a liberal application of money. I remember what this location looked like before the hotel was built and somebody did a great job. The hot tub is in a hideaway cove not far from the water slide. While you are here , go to the beach walk and enjoy the porch swing. There is a salt water lagoon that is nice for a dip, too.

#4 Pono Kai in Kapa’a

Some of my Kauai friends will laugh at me for this one. Pono Kai is not a luxury hotel. Its condos that have some residents and also vacation rentals. Their main attraction is a bicycle/walking path beside the ocean and a scenic but rocky beach. I guess they wanted to make up for that with a nice pool and a really hot tub. Whew, I am not kidding. It’s the hottest. Don’t fall asleep or you will become soup! You won’t last 10 minutes before you are just dangling your feet in it.

On April 13 the Mayor, along with the police and fire chiefs of Kauai, led a march protesting violence against women in a YWCA event called Walk A Mile in her Shoes. They strutted around the community college campus wearing pink slippers and high heels! You can bet some of the boys were limping to the hot tub that night.

Kauai people like to stay active in all kinds of causes. I wrote about that in a previous article.

#5 Aston Waimea Plantation Cottages

This group of 50 plus private bungalows used to be worker housing for the Waimea Sugar Mill company. It’s got an old Hawaii charm that can’t be found anywhere else. Even the furniture is nostalgic. This resort is unique and located on the west side where the sun is always shining brightly. It’s another place to order up a massage on the lawn and the bar is especially well regarded for the tropical drink menu. You’ll get your head spinning in the right direction with these potent brews served next the big pool and hot tub. That’s a great place to watch the sunset.
